20th anniversary of the launch of Red Alert
The complexity of the real-time strategy game does not have many fans compared to other series, but those who love it are very loyal.
20 years ago, on October 23, 2000, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 was officially released by Westwood Studios. The 2.5 D real-time strategy game is set in the 1970s, taking place after the Allied campaign ended at the beginning. The expanded version of the game is Yuri’s Revenge with a new mission system and units, buildings, and countries.
Like the first, Red Alert 2 has two factions, the Allies and the Soviets, with different strengths and weaknesses. To win, players must take advantage of each faction’s forte, as well as exploit the opponent’s weaknesses. In general, the Soviets prevailed on the ground with a powerful tank system and a quick pre-emptive attack, while the Allies stood out in naval and air warfare.
The Allies have an advantage in large-sized maps thanks to their mobile force, satellite technology that allows for full map view and instant teleportation technology. In contrast, the Soviets often won in short game stages or small maps, because the army had high stamina suitable for a direct attack.
Red Alert 2 is highly appreciated by professionals and players. Specifically, in Metacritic’s aggregate, the game scored 84 meta scores from critics and 8.9 points from users.
In fact, Command & Conquer has always attracted a great deal in the gaming world. It is one of the earliest series of real-time strategy games on Windows 95. It, along with Age of Empires from Microsoft, are considered the opening games for the RTS genre on the computer.
Besides the two names mentioned above, Warcraft 3, Company of Heroes, Supreme Commander, Starcraft are also popular real-time strategy games for a while. Therefore, the gameplay system is often fast-paced, continuous, RTS games require sharp reflexes from the player when making manual decisions or withdrawing.
To play well, gamers need to have a managerial mindset and strategic vision in fighting, protecting, restoring individual works or maintaining resource resources, soldiers. This is also the reason why players who love and stick with this genre are usually not much but very long and loyal.
